Inspiring stories about GOOD people doing GOOD things

Beautiful Women, Inside and Out

Belinda Philp - Thursday, March 07, 2013

Inspiring Women, come in all shapes, sizes, ages and cultures. They provide us with someone to look up to and choose parts of their life that we can model to better our own. They often show us many lessons in life that they have already learned so we can bypass what could be difficult learning’s.

As a woman I have to say a MASSIVE THANKYOU to all of those women who simply are the BEST unique self they possibly can be. You constantly show me what greatness I can achieve in my life as you have taken many of those steps before me.

When asked to outline a few amazing women who inspire me my list could go on forever, because there are so many fragments of people’s lives that I am in awe of and constantly take on as my own practice if it seems to work well.

Here are a few women who hold the bar of life achievement quite high in their own industries, whose life stories both intrigue and inspire me:

Eloise Welling is a local Grays Point lady who recently competed for Australia in the 2012 Olympics for the 10,000 metre race. She is one of the founding partners of Love Mercy Foundation- who set up much needed health centres and child sponsorship programs in Uganda.

I had the privilege of watching Eloise share her story with the local residents of Grays Point recently and learned that she saw the Olympics on TV at age 10 and decided that one day she wanted to compete for Australia.

Eloise was tenacious in pursuing this goal while enduring many knockbacks and physical setbacks.

At a turning point in her career she was fortunate to meet Ugandan Olympian and former child soldier Julius Achon. Achon shared his life story of growing up in war torn Uganda. It was at this time that Wellings decided she had another just as important calling in life as her Olympic dream- ‘to help ‘others live an empowered life’. From this the Love Mercy Foundation was founded.

One lesson that stuck with me from Eloise’s talk was “GOD created us to heal stronger than we were before.” (This was one of her most profound lesson from multiple stress fractures that threatened her Olympic dream). And “a stress fracture will never reoccur in the same place again, the bone will heal stronger in that particular place.”

Eloise shows us that a spark of inspiration as a child can be fueled to achieve any dream if passion and persistence if present.

Eloise is just about to become a mother for the first time.  We wish her every success in pursuing her future goals.  Thank you for your inspiration Eloise.

You can support Love Mercy’s Cents for Seeds program through their fundraiser page here.

GoodieDo wrote a blog post about the Love Mercy’s Cents for Seeds project back in October 2012. View it here.

The second woman I wanted to write about is Miranda Kerr.

I often walk through the airport faced with large billboard posters of this gorgeous mother looking back at me.  I often hear fellow passengers comment ‘She is just amazing!’  Who is she? Miranda Kerr. Sure she is a supermodel so she has to be physically beautiful.

As a mother of two I often am amazed at how women find the time to really look after themselves when they have beautiful little people to look after also.

The reason I have selected Miranda Kerr as one of my inspirational women is because of her core values of health, nutrition and devotion to a spiritual source.

Known as ‘an advocate for all things natural healthy and organic,’ Kerr provides a great role model to young women. Here are a few of her achievements:

  • International catwalk and Victoria’s Secret super model
  • Was organically found as model talent at 13yrs of age when her girlfriend entered her in a Dolly magazine competition
  • A mother of 2 yr old Flynn
  • The ambassador of Qantas
  • Founder of organic skin care range Kora Organics
  • Practices and promotes healthy lifestyle and eating
  • Authored her first book ‘Treasure Yourself’ an inspiration to women of all ages about self confidence, inner beauty and acceptance. Check it out here.
  • Dedicates her time to Kids Helpline. She says “I really want to encourage the younger generations to believe in themselves’.

Juggling motherhood with community advocacy and being involved in topics she is passionate about while simply promoting a super healthy lifestyle- check out Miranda’s blog posts here. I find Miranda a fabulous inspiration for myself, teenagers and women around the globe.

Thank you Miranda for being so darn gorgeous inside and out!

Because it FEELS GREAT!

Today I said 'Goodbye and happy travels' to a massive box of baby boy clothes.

This box of clothing had serviced my son Jude very well and is now on an adventure to clothe children of Uganda.

It gets even better than that!

The beautiful, wonderful, talented girls at Love Mercy Foundation- Caitlin Barrett and Australian Olympian Eloise Wellings working alongside Ugandan Olympic Athlete Julius Achon have achieved a milestone dream of building a health centre in Otuke County, Uganda.

The centre to be named Kristina Achuma Clinic in memory of Julius' mother who perished without adequate medical attention when shot by the Lord's Resistance Army in 2004- Now Better known as KONY's army of children.

Prior to the building of this centre the nearest medical centre was in Lira 42 miles from Otuke County. And the vast majority of Otuke residents cannot afford transportation to Lira or the care offered there. As a result many suffer of die needlessly due to a lack routine preventative healthcare or emergency medical treatment.

The Kristina Achuma clinic will officially open in August with a massive town celebration.

The Love Mercy Foundation have raised funds in Australia in excess of $150,000 to build, employ staff and cover the ongoing costs associated with running a health centre.

A large proportion of the fundraising has come from the annual Sutherland to Surf fun run of 11km. With kids, mum's, dad's and dogs gaining sponsorship from friends and family to participate in the run and raise money for the Love Mercy Foundation. (Eloise pictured centre of picture with participants from the 2011 Sutherland to Surf run)

Sutherland to Surf will be run Sunday the 22nd of July and Love Mercy have already surpassed their fundraising goal of $50,000. It is so fun to watch the fundraising meter click higher and higher. Participants running for the Love Mercy Foundation will be treated to a breakfast in Cronulla at the end of their run.

So Bye Bye baby clothes 'Hello' that ZING I was talking about in my last blog.

Picturing little Ugandan babies decked out in warm cuddly outfits Jude used to wear gives my heart a warm ZING!

You can jump on the bandwagon too

1. Participate in the Sutherland to surf. Create a fundraising page and raise funds for Love Mercy Foundation. There is always 2013 if it is to late for this year.

2. Just donate on Love Mercy's Home page

3. Watch Love Mercy's fundometer tick over and share this story and your excitement with a friend

4. Contact the girls at Love Mercy and see if you can volunteer in their health centre if you are traveling to Uganda. (they may not be able to answer this until it opens)

Whatever you decide to do. Just jump on the Doing Good bandwagon because it feels GREAT!!!!

Have a super week finding your ZING!

A famous SURFING quote!

Isn't surfing all about absorbing the beauty, the sound of the crashing waves, the negative ions and getting fully recharged. Isn't it ALL about receiving not giving?

Saltmotion based in Manly, Australia LOVE the ocean and surfing SO MUCH they want to share it with the local people of the Solomon Islands by hosting an appeal for people to donate ALL old surfboards taking up room in their garages, gardens, apartments, houses. Boards that were once loved but have been upgraded or are no longer used.

(by saltmotion)

All boards donated will be shipped to the Solomon Islands to help the local people, 'natural water people' who 'have an amazing ability to take to the waves' learn how to surf which will create new opportunities of surf based tourism for the local people .

Saltmotion star photographer and founder Joel Coleman says "in 2011 a group of friends from Saltmotion went on a surf trip to the Solomons. The trip turned out to be the most amazing, eye-opening, experiences of our lives(we also scored perfect surf)."

Coleman believes that the 'wave rich' Solomon's' 'has the potential to become the perfect example of properly managed surf tourism where locals benefit from traveling surfers'. He writes a detailed article of the local culture and local laws for development which explains WHY surfing tourism would be empowering and well managed for the local people.

Saltmotion will be screening the EPIC SURF FILM 180degrees South on a date to be confirmed at the old theatre in St. Matt's on the Corso, Manly to help raise the $5000 shipping costs for the surf boards and some much needed stationary and school books for the local people.

You can HELP by:

  1. Clearing your space and DONATING unused surf boards (Dates : 10th to 18th of Feb at Saltmotion Gallery and Patagonia Manly)  Board collection and film DETAILS

  2. Coming to an UNFORGETTABLE FILM night with raffles, prizes, live music and great cheer ( Place: St. Matt's on the Corso- Manly. Time: 7pm for a 7.15 start, 27th of March) minimum $10 donation.

In 2008 a group of Saltmotion friends donated a collection of surfboards to the people of PNG- this was a HUGE SUCCESS so here it is again- this time for the people of the Solomons.

P.S. If you have any interest in the beach or surfing whatsoever- DO your yourself a favor and subscribe to the saltmotion newsletter. Joel personally captures amazing photographs of local and international waves, surfers, beaches, people on a daily basis. Very invigorating to welcome you to your computer each morning!

Fundraising over a coffee....at Charlie Lovett Cafe

Belinda Philp - Monday, December 19, 2011

Can business be a WIN WIN WIN situation with joint ventures?

You bet YA!

Here's a great example, a perfect business day yesterday for GoodieDo.

1. The day involved; GoodieDo hosting a market stall at Charlie Lovett Cafe Neutral Bay alongside 5 local stalls offering organic, wholesome, handmade services and products.
I had a jig to some live music, drank some amazing coffee and mingled with the local Neutral Bay community. (We even had a Hong Kong paddling contingent come and join us for the day). I met amazing people from all over the world who connected well with GoodieDo's product, empowering people globally. FUN FUN FUN and of course providing people with much needed, beautiful Christmas gifts!

2. Charlie Lovett added EXTRA VALUE to their customers in offering them GREAT products and services ontop of food and coffee. Celebration was in the air.

3. Redlands School; The lucky recipient of Charlie Lovett's fundraiser made 30% of GoodieDo's sales for the day for the school music department. Without doing anything, just being who they are. FUNDRAISING made easy!!!

4. Pavla and Shane the owners of Charlie Lovett Neutral Bay LOVE up and coming talented musicians AND ADMIRE music teacher David Day's efforts in support young musicians; thus chose REDLANDS SCHOOL MUSIC DEPT. as a worthy cause to raise funds for.

So maybe it should be a WIN WIN WIN WIN WIN WIN..............and on and on.

Let me list WHO got some great value from this joint venture:

  • the environment - recycled, organic materials
  • The artisans who make GoodieDo products and their immediate communities
  • Charlie Lovett
  • Charlie Lovett customers
  • Shane and Pavla feel great about supporting a great cause and hosting a great day
  • the people receiving the GoodieDo gifts bought
  • the people purchasing the GoodieDo products feel great about giving and empowered product
  • GoodieDo got to reach out and help local and global communities
  • I had a great experience with great people and got to share the GoodieDo word
  • Redlands School music department
  • Redlands School students who love and study music

If fundraising can be so much FUN and so EMPOWERING to such a large group of people just through one campaign. Imagine how many people's lives you can POSITIVELY touch with your own fundraising campaign???

Go on state the number out loud. Is it 100? 500? 1000? 2000? 50 000?

All you have to do is think of a cause you are passionate about and become a GoodieDo fundraiser to share the gift of giving with everyone you LOVE!!!

Did I mention GoodieDo's fundraising technology is about to get a turbo injection?

It will be even easier to connect and share your message of GOODNESS with the world while raising funds to DO your own GOOD STUFF!

P.S. Go on raising funds for you to do good is a WIN WIN WIN thing to do

P.P.S Just fill in the FORM and then share your campaign with EVERYONE you LOVE.

Every time I drive passed it IT GRABS Me....

Belinda Philp - Thursday, October 20, 2011

SPRING FAIR , OKTOBERFEST! I'm not sure which of these two grab me first.

I get an excited feeling that warm weather and flowers are in the air, then the knowledge that festivities and fun in MY local community are approaching.

TWO BIG banners welcome you as you enter Grays Point informing you that Gray's Point Public School is having their Spring Fair on October 22nd at 9am and its those first two words SPRING FAIR and OKTOBERFEST that grab me each time.

Maybe it's because THIS year GoodieDo is supporting Grade 6 students Ruby and Brooke from my local community of Grays Point. And that the whole concept of communities supporting communities is really close to home for this particular fundraiser.

Ruby came over tonight and helped me pump up some Jinta Sports Balls for the event. I sent her home with some flyers to cut and paste.

What excites me most is doing FUN things with communities and supporting each other. To see the enthusiasm of Ruby and Brooke wanting to help out, to learn new things and to teach me new things is super rewarding.

If you want to support local kids doing GOOD things then

1. Come along to the Spring Fair, Okoberfest on Saturday 22nd(30% of GoodieDo's sales on the day will be DONATED to grade 6 for their end of year gift to the school THANK  YOU gift.)

2. Purchase something you NEED,  or a gift for someone else, and help the girls fundraising efforts through your DO GOOD purchase, and FEEL GOOD about it as all products help to make the world a better place. If not on the day anytime before the end of the year purchase through Ruby and Brooke's fundraising page here.

3. Ruby and Brooke also have an offline Ball Sale going on until December. If you cant think of a birthday or Christmas pressie and you see them riding around the neighborhood hit 'em up to place your order for fair-trade balls. They just LOOOVEEE ball sports!

P.S. See you there:)

P.P.S If you guess the closest number of Green Grove Organics Choccies in the jar at the GoodieDo stall you WIN the whole jar!!! Winners will be notified by email week beginning 24th of October.

P.P.S How long do you think it would take you to EAT 2kg of Chocolate?

Mksu kneAi Bkisnt?! - What the world would look like if you couldn't read.

Candice Vleugels - Friday, September 30, 2011

Ever thought about how life would be if you couldn't read?  Maybe something like this...

Vhae uoy veer ouhtgth obaut woh file ouwld eb fi ouy cldoun't dear?

You wouldn't be able to waste time on Facebook, read the news, delete the spam from your email...hell even read your email, or drive or take a bus because you couldn't read the signs.  HOW WOULD YOU LIVE?!

What if your children never got an education and never learned how to read?

You'd feel pretty crap, probably. You'd give yourself the worst parent of the decade award, I bet. You'd also be a social outcast for letting it happen. Life would be a dead end for both you and your kids. You might think - LIFE SUCKS.

Well, for an estimated 796 million people in the world, life IS that hard because they cannot read or write.

That's one in every five adults.

Most of these people are living in developing countries and 2/3 of them are women.

BUT... if a woman in a developing country does learn to read, her children are 50% more likely to survive past the age of 5.

AND... a girl living in Africa that received an education is 3 times - READ IT - 3 times!!! less likely to contract HIV.

Those girls that stay in school are more likely to receive higher wages, have healthier children and live longer... and the same for her children and grandchildren.

Literacy and education improve the quality and length of life for poor communities around the world and is a key to growth and prosperity for developing countries.

This past month UNSECO and the international community celebrated International Literacy Day. In honor of this day, the powerhouse education non-profit, Room to Read, launched a month long campaign to ensure that all children around the world learn to read.

There is only ONE DAY LEFT in the campaign for you to help children have a chance at a better future.

Here are some EASY things that you can do to help:

1. Invest in literacy by making a small donation. Even a little bit helps because your donation will be matched by Better World Books!

2. Educate yourself by watching this video

3. Spread the word. Tweet for #Literacy this message:

Hwat wdulo hte lrodw kolo lkei fi ouy ocldu otn erda? Noigmeths kile stih. #RTforLiteracy (Each RT=$1 to @RoomtoRead) http://bit.ly/ILD2011

For every tweet Random House will donate $1 to Room to Read's literacy programs.

4.  Start your own campaign to raise money for Room to Read. Run a marathon, host an event or come up with your own creative idea. Here are some ideas on how to get started.

Don't waste time and do it today in honor of International Literacy Day and all of the struggling mothers and children out there that need your help.

Thanks for doing your GOOD deed today!

P.S. Its so easy to just do one of the things above! Don't be lazy!

P.P.S. If you want to start a fundraising campaign, contact us at GoodieDo and we can help you spread the word and raise additional funds!

Dreaming of a better life for Balinese

Candice Vleugels - Tuesday, September 20, 2011

Have you ever dreamed of doing something to make the world a better place? Not just giving money to a charity or volunteering for a few hours, but really making it a big part of how you spend your time and energy? Cate Bolt not only dreams of making the world a better place, she does it every day on her own steam.

In June of 2010, Cate started Foundation 18, Indonesia, an orphanage in Northern Bali, which homes children without a living parent or children whose parents have relinquished their children. The orphanage follows the group home model, where the children are raised in a family environment which means they have bedrooms instead of dormitories, eat meals as a family and the staff  play a parental role to the children.  The project quickly expanded to being more than "just an orphanage," but a child-friendly center for all children where they can access education, food and healthcare.

In response to a need on a recent visit to the center, Cate dreams of establishing a fairtrade clothing and accessories manufacturing center to employ mothers in the area, stimulate the local economy and use profits to sustain the orphanage and other humanitarian projects in the community.

YOU CAN HELP CATE AND THE MOTHERS AND CHILDREN IN THIS COMMUNITY TO FULFILL THEIR DREAM!!  She has registered her dream on the Sunsuper Dreams website.  Every month the dream with the most votes gets AU$5,000 to help them make their dream a reality.

We are asking you to VOTE HERE for Cate's dream.  It will only take a few minutes and you can consider it your deed today to help make the world a better place!

We also want to sincerely THANK Cate for all of her efforts in helping some of the world's most vulnerable people.  The world needs more people like you, Cate.

Dressing to GIVE to yourself, others and the earth

Belinda Philp - Wednesday, September 14, 2011

When you get out of bed and choose your outfit for the day. What is is saying about you? How do you feel? Are you co-ordinated, comfortable, proud to be wearing something which tells the world a little about you or does it give you a great feeling knowing that you stand for something? Is it creating a sustainable environment, a cleaner environment, a fairer work place, peace, education, a wage for a working mother to feed her children?

OR is it contributing to global pollution, disempowering poorly paid workers and compromising your  health and well-being?

Being a part of GoodieDo I have the good fortune of sourcing gorgeous clothing items which are benefical to others and to the earth. And in this great job perk, I get to try all of the empowering products before offering them to our fundraisers.

For example I throw on a funky pair of tropical stripe organic, fairtrade, Pant to Poverty knickers, then an Omni Peace t-shirt , I dangle a Dialog handbag over my arm, and my outfit is almost complete minus the pants. I have constantly been on the lookout for a pair of pants or skirt/dress to complete my empowered outfit and finally I have found them.

I have recently been in contact with the yoga clothing company wear.it. Their approach to creating beautiful, fashionable clothing which is so comfortable it can be worn out or can be worn to practice yoga in is based on yogic principles of respecting communities and nature. Many of we'ars pieces are made from organic cotton or bamboo, and some of their dyes are plant based 'so when you have worn your t-shirt to shreds, you can throw it on the compost heap and let it feed back into the earth'.

In manufacturing clothing it is often difficult for small companies to have strict production requirements which are beneficial to the environment and the workers and be competitively priced at the same time. Here is another example of an inspirational company basing their whole ethos on making the world a better place. Well done wear.it!

We are looking forward to offering some of we'ars  clothing pieces to GoodieDo fundraisers in near future. Stay tuned for notification of this exciting addition.

If you could make the world a healthier place and feel amazing in the fibers you wear knowing that your action as a consumer is changing the world for the better would you?

Sleeping outside this Winter to raise money for homelessness

Candice Vleugels - Friday, August 05, 2011
I blogged a few weeks ago about Ailish and Ash, two great kids who are putting together a series of videos to empower kids with information and motivation to make positive change in the world.  I've never met them, but I love them!  I learned through their tweets @TheYouCrew that they are participating in the Winter Sleepout 2011 organized by Mission Australia.

The Winter Sleepout is an event that is organized by different groups of supporters to raise money and awareness for homelessness.  The money raised goes to fund the various homeless services run by Mission Australia. These services include shelter, food, clothing and support to help homeless individuals and families get back on their feet.  Apparently these sleepouts have been taking place for over 20 years in weird and wonderful places such as the Toronga Zoo and the Sydney House Opera steps!

For many people and families homelessness is an issue that can spring up suddenly and without much warning due to lost jobs or mental illness. Its an extremely hard fight to win and come back from. If you have a few extra dollars, please consider supporting Ailish and Ash in their campaign.  They are just under half-way to meeting their goal of AU$360.  Alternatively start a Winter Sleepout campaign of your own!

Thanks for reading and Happy Friday!  Belinda, my partner in GoodieDo, will be taking over the blog for next week.  Enjoy!

Kids PASSIONATE about global change.

Candice Vleugels - Monday, July 18, 2011
Today I learned about a super inspiring project that helps Australian kids get involved in causes that are important to them. Planet You was started by 2 siblings (and their Mum, Cate), Ailish (age 15) and Ash (age 7) with a focus to "empower kids by not only providing an unbiased overview of the facts but by also giving them the tools to help facilitate change."  Wow!  What a mission for 2 kids! They achieve this amazing goal by creating a "series of videos targeting kids aged 6 to 14. Each video is under 10 minutes in length and covers a topic relevant to today's youth market." You can watch a few clips of the videos on their website or take a look at the clips below. They cover a wide variety of topics to orangutan conservation, brain cancer and homelessness and try to engage their viewers to take action by raising money, learning more and volunteering.

We believe that the world needs more kids (and Mums) like Ailish and Ash who make it their mission to raise awareness, inspire others and who are passionate about global change. Have fun checking them out and get involved!!
