Roma Boots: How One Company is Changing Lives and Ending Poverty by Fashioning it Forward

Danni Massin - Tuesday, March 05, 2013

"For poise, walk with the knowledge that you never walk alone.” Sam Levenson

Where did your purchase come from?

We hear that question a lot.

Where did you get those designer jeans?

No, I don’t mean from which department store. I mean which factory sewed those hems? Was it fair trade and produced in a safe, ethical work environment?

It’s a good question. Here’s another.

Where is your purchase GOING?

They say the Internet is pulling us apart, isolating us, driving us further from each other.

I say the Internet has created a world in which we can reach out and connect with each other like never before.

Take Roma Boots, created by Romanian born Samuel Bistrian in 2010, after he spent years watching impoverished children braving the elements with little more than flimsy, broken shoes to protect their feet, assuming they had shoes at all. Many suffered frost bite in the colder months, losing toes and experiencing foot deformities as they aged.

Bistrian himself struggled as a child growing up without adequate footwear in a small village marked by snowy weather and extreme poverty.

“When I was six years old, I received my first pair of rain boots, which were actually passed down from three older siblings. It was such an exciting moment for me because I knew I could actually go outside and play in the snow or in the mud and not worry about my toes freezing.”

Though he later moved to the United States to work in the fashion industry, Bistrian kept the memory of his home and people close to his heart. Then one day he had an idea, one that would change his life and the lives of thousands forever.

His mission? To infuse fashion with charity, passion with compassion, to create Roma Provisions (Roma Boots), where every pair of rain boots sold, a second pair is donated to a child in need. 10% of each purchase also goes to the Roma for all Foundation. For more information, watch this.

This fashionable charity is all about spreading the LOVE; it's etched in every fiber of the products they sell and give; it’s even in their name!

Roma=Amor
Amor=Love
Roma Boots=Love Boots

Roma is also the proper name for the poor gypsy population, the primary group this charity has helped equip with boots so far.

Roma Provisions takes on-and outdoes!-Santa Claus in its quarterly boot drops to distribute the shoes "... on the streets, in schools, parks or inside specific facilities. It is a joy to see the faces of these precious children when we fit them with their new Roma Boots!" Watch this!

Their love and generosity of spirit is bursting from every seam. The boots, made of natural latex rubber, a quick dry cotton lining, and a three layer insole, are produced in a fair trade factory that is routinely monitored for sound labor practices and conditions. Now that's some boots made for walking...and stomping all over poverty!

Roma Boots doesn't stop at protecting feet; they're also about nourishing young minds. In addition to donating a pair of boots to a child, every order includes SCHOOL SUPPLIES. Roma Boots believes education is the most powerful weapon for breaking free from poverty, and they want to give children the tools to step out from under the heavy hand of poverty for GOOD.

With every step you take in your Roma Boots, know that a child is out there taking a step in his or hers. With your purchase, you have opened up new roads of travel that would have once been out of reach, which would have been an impossible dream, but that YOU made possible.

Now that's fashion that never goes out of style!
Feel the connection.
Roma Boots. Good for the sole.

If GOOD karma is created through every choice you make. And you already know that every choice you make has some impact on the world. Then wouldn't you choose to feel amazing through every purchase on many more levels than one?

E.g. Scenario 1

You buy a fashionable new top.

1. You feel good because it is new

2. You feel good because you look good in it.

3. You have NO idea where it was manufactured or the working conditions of the people who manufactured it. Are they happy?

4. You have NO idea of the materials it is made from. Are they synthetics or plastics, are they good for your health to be wearing ALL day? Have the dyes used polluted precious environments where it is manufactured?

VERSUS

Scenario 2

You buy a fashionable new top from a company you know cares about the environment and the health/happiness of its workers

1. You feel good because it is new and you look good in it

2. You feel good because you know your purchase has helped someone live a better life

3. You feel good because you are educated about your purchase and have made an empowered choice

4. You look even MORE AMAZING because you have the bonus feel good factors of being educated, positively contributing to society and being healthy because the materials are all natural or organic, and the positive energy in making the garment is passed onto its wearer.

WOW WOW WOW FACTOR!!!!

GoodieDo can even ADD one more additional FEEL GOOD factor!!!

5. Buy your garment through a GoodieDo fundraiser and 30% of your purchase price will go towards their DO GOOD cause. Which might be: Running a marathon for cancer, funding micro loans for developing nations women to build business, school programs anything GOOD.

Mantra scarf GIVEAWAY! Be AWARE and wrap yourself in whatever you need!

Candice Vleugels - Tuesday, April 03, 2012

Do you have a fuzzy mind or lack of focus?

Do you want to reconnect with your love for yourself and your life?

Do you need to feel that everything will be ok and have more compassion for yourself and where you are right now?

Are you lacking the courage to take that giant leap to bring yourself closer to your fullest potential?

Are you unable to tap into your intuition and the knowledge in uncertain times?

I find myself answering, "Yes!" to just about all of these questions. Right now my family and I are going through a huge transition in our lives, as we are in the process of moving from our long-time home (of over 9 years) in Hong Kong to finding a new city to call home in the United States and we are constantly having to address feelings of uncertainty, anxiety, fear, lack of clarity and the inability to appreciate and love the present moment.

Perhaps because of this, I am super excited to announce the launch of AWARE888 scarves on GoodieDo!  These scarves are not only simple, yet beautifully refined accessories, they are tools for healing as well.  How can a scarf heal??...I think I heard you say?  Here's how:

Each scarf is designed to promote one of five specific feelings of well being to address the lack of various fulfillment in our lives, using four complimentary techniques:

1. Mantras - each design has a simple mantra embroidered on it including Clarity, Amor (Love), Vita (Life), Grace, and Courage. The power of carrying a positive message with you throughout the day can replace the negative thoughts and emotions and invite positive change into your life.

2. Color Therapy - each design has a carefully chosen color to reflect the positive emotions associated with its mantra. For instance the green color of the Grace scarf encourages healing and compassion from the natural world and the Pink Passion color of the Amor scarf is said to create a positive shift in your heart center.

3. Healing Power of Crystals -  each design also has a small crystal sewn into the mantra embroidery. The crystal has also been chosen for its transformative powers associated with the corresponding mantra. For example the Silver Vita scarf is embellished with a Hematite crystal, which is known for its powers of transformation and is a symbol of life energy.

4. Reiki - each scarf has been blessed by a Reiki Master with positive healing energy. Reiki is a spiritual practice in which practitioners channel energy in the universe to others to help in self-healing and regaining equilibrium.

Chose one of the five different Aware888 scarf designs that speaks to you most...

White Clarity for clarity and balance (Hong Kong shop | Australia shop)

Silver Vita for intuition (Hong Kong shop | Australia shop)

Pink Amor for love of self and one's life (Hong Kong shop | Australia shop)

Green Grace for acceptance and compassion (Hong Kong shop | Australia shop)

Courage Sunburn for courage to take a giant ...or tiny... leap (Hong Kong shop | Australia shop)

They all sound good to me!!

What's more, these scarves are not only beneficial for you to wear, but they are also empowering women artisans in Northern Thailand to create a better lives fo

So in true GoodieDo spirit, we are GIVING AWAY one scarf this week to one of our lucky fans.  Here is all you have to do for a chance to win -r themselves and their family. Made in the spirit of honoring all living beings and with Fair Trade practices, you can feel amazing when you wear this scarf knowing that not only are you channeling positive energy and transformation for yourself but also for vulnerable women and their families.

Dreaming of a better life for Balinese

Candice Vleugels - Tuesday, September 20, 2011

Have you ever dreamed of doing something to make the world a better place? Not just giving money to a charity or volunteering for a few hours, but really making it a big part of how you spend your time and energy? Cate Bolt not only dreams of making the world a better place, she does it every day on her own steam.

In June of 2010, Cate started Foundation 18, Indonesia, an orphanage in Northern Bali, which homes children without a living parent or children whose parents have relinquished their children. The orphanage follows the group home model, where the children are raised in a family environment which means they have bedrooms instead of dormitories, eat meals as a family and the staff  play a parental role to the children.  The project quickly expanded to being more than "just an orphanage," but a child-friendly center for all children where they can access education, food and healthcare.

In response to a need on a recent visit to the center, Cate dreams of establishing a fairtrade clothing and accessories manufacturing center to employ mothers in the area, stimulate the local economy and use profits to sustain the orphanage and other humanitarian projects in the community.

YOU CAN HELP CATE AND THE MOTHERS AND CHILDREN IN THIS COMMUNITY TO FULFILL THEIR DREAM!!  She has registered her dream on the Sunsuper Dreams website.  Every month the dream with the most votes gets AU$5,000 to help them make their dream a reality.

We are asking you to VOTE HERE for Cate's dream.  It will only take a few minutes and you can consider it your deed today to help make the world a better place!

We also want to sincerely THANK Cate for all of her efforts in helping some of the world's most vulnerable people.  The world needs more people like you, Cate.

Dressing to GIVE to yourself, others and the earth

Belinda Philp - Wednesday, September 14, 2011

When you get out of bed and choose your outfit for the day. What is is saying about you? How do you feel? Are you co-ordinated, comfortable, proud to be wearing something which tells the world a little about you or does it give you a great feeling knowing that you stand for something? Is it creating a sustainable environment, a cleaner environment, a fairer work place, peace, education, a wage for a working mother to feed her children?

OR is it contributing to global pollution, disempowering poorly paid workers and compromising your  health and well-being?

Being a part of GoodieDo I have the good fortune of sourcing gorgeous clothing items which are benefical to others and to the earth. And in this great job perk, I get to try all of the empowering products before offering them to our fundraisers.

For example I throw on a funky pair of tropical stripe organic, fairtrade, Pant to Poverty knickers, then an Omni Peace t-shirt , I dangle a Dialog handbag over my arm, and my outfit is almost complete minus the pants. I have constantly been on the lookout for a pair of pants or skirt/dress to complete my empowered outfit and finally I have found them.

I have recently been in contact with the yoga clothing company wear.it. Their approach to creating beautiful, fashionable clothing which is so comfortable it can be worn out or can be worn to practice yoga in is based on yogic principles of respecting communities and nature. Many of we'ars pieces are made from organic cotton or bamboo, and some of their dyes are plant based 'so when you have worn your t-shirt to shreds, you can throw it on the compost heap and let it feed back into the earth'.

In manufacturing clothing it is often difficult for small companies to have strict production requirements which are beneficial to the environment and the workers and be competitively priced at the same time. Here is another example of an inspirational company basing their whole ethos on making the world a better place. Well done wear.it!

We are looking forward to offering some of we'ars  clothing pieces to GoodieDo fundraisers in near future. Stay tuned for notification of this exciting addition.

If you could make the world a healthier place and feel amazing in the fibers you wear knowing that your action as a consumer is changing the world for the better would you?

The Nakate Project: Only 22hours left to Save Lives in Uganda

Belinda Philp - Friday, August 12, 2011
The Nakate Project still needs a further $216 donated in the next 20hours to meet their goal of $2000. You know the old adage you can feed a man a fish for a day or, teach him to fish and he will live for a lifetime. This is just what Shanely Knox and Antonio Esteban at the Nakate Project are doing for women in Uganda, who otherwise are forced between choosing to earn 25cents for manual back breaking work or prostitution to care for their families. Risking their health and their lives through diseases such as AIDS.
This video out lines why we need to take action against poverty.

The Nakate Project will work with select local Ugandan women who meet three criteria:
1. She is strong enough to start her own business without the Nakate project
2. She has limited work options; prostitution or manual back breaking labor.
3. She is willing to take the business training provided and save the money earned and invest in her own business such as a vegetable stand, or shoe business, or any other.

This Amazing Project focuses on 3 concepts: Sustainability - of locals to continue with their own businesses without help, Localization=  Success in existing communities with locally owned businesses and Empowerment - pride, independence and value of work.

The Nakate Project will initially employ women to use their skills in making high end fashion jewelry designed by Antonio Esteban
The women will be taught skills in capitol, business training and how to handle money. They will be paid a comparable wage that they would be paid through a successful business in their own village. They will then be encouraged to begin their own local business with the skills they have learnt with support and monitoring of if the women are ready to be entirely supported by their income in that business.
Empowering women to live successfully in their own area, growing local economies and creating sustainable businesses is the only way to truly alleviate poverty for future generations.
Children model their parents for their first seven years of life, lets help to make a more promising future for at least some Ugandan children. The Nakate Project is a brilliant initiative which is providing alternatives for Ugandan Women.
Please support through donation or through buying Nakate Project jewelry hand made by Ugandan women to help bring about permanent change.

Meet Monica, a Mend seamstress in Uganda

Candice Vleugels - Monday, July 04, 2011
We thought you would like to learn in more detail how GoodieDo helps people around the world do great things. Here is a beautiful, funny and inspiring video about Monica, a seamstress in Uganda making bags for Mend, from Invisible Children.  Monica is one of the 12 women that work in the Mend workshop, an empowerment project that helps former child soldiers and abductees get back on their feet. When you purchase a bag from Mend, the name of the seamstress is sewn into the bag.  Then you can go to their website and meet your handbag maker through a short biographic video. Watch this video about Monica and you see smiles, dancing and laughing.  Its contagious!  Whenever I watch this video I am instantly put in a great mood.  Not only is Monica just downright funny, but she also a reminder that you are helping someone real through your purchase... someone with a name, a family and a sense of humor. A handbag that puts a smile on your face every time you use it... it doesn't get much better than that!

Mend - Monica from Andrea Nakhla on Vimeo.

We only have 2 bags from Mend left right now - one messenger bag in army and one cinch bag in black. Check them out and find out "who made your bag?!"
