Inspiring stories about GOOD people doing GOOD things

Are you an Urban LOVER????

Belinda Philp - Saturday, June 02, 2012

Join a community of other Urban Lovers and come to FUN FREE events in Sydney's CBD area.

Why?

  • You are GUARANTEED to meet other interesting people with a great story to tell.
  • You are GUARANTEED to find a part of Sydney that is in need of a little LOVE - that you may not have known previously
  • You are GUARANTEED to find a dynamic, fun scene were communication, fun and laughter if free
  • You are GUARANTEED to be welcomed as a part of a community

Where?

Locations change for each event. The first Urban Love event was at UPN May 26th, 2012- yes a difficult to find place, but definitely worth it! Right outside one of the entrances to UTS-University of Technology Sydney.

Directions: Take escalator on George St- (Charlie Lovett side) opposite the Mercure Hotel down to the subway. Walk left through tunnel til you find an entrance to a gorgeous big walkway lined with lights and trees. When you see the upturned shopping trolleys and hear some beat box tunes and laughter you will know you have arrived. A well hidden spot right outside UTS.

Why was this spot chosen for the first event?

Creator Qu Faraday who experienced Being Public for 20 Days and 20 nights in Sydney's CBD to test how livable Sydney is for the disadvantaged and homeless answered 'In my 20 days of Being Public this was the MOST DANGEROUS place for a person to sleep at night. I learned this through trying to sleep on one of the benches and finding someones hand in my jeans trying to pick pocket me. I was gratefully informed by some helpful security guards from UTS that this was NOT THE PLACE TO SLEEP IF I WANTED TO STAY SAFE'.

Why is this place SO UNSAFE?

The access is difficult for Police to get to quickly, with no road access. It is also difficult to describe how to get to this particular spot quickly. Ultimo Pedestrian Network (UPN) is located "nowhere in the middle of everything" -right in the middle of the city! The SYdney Harbour Foreshore Authority has recognized it's need for revitalization and community loving!.

The #2 Urban Love Bash has been announced and will be held on the 16th of June, 2012 in the REDFERN COMMUNITY GARDEN on James St.

What you need to Do:

  1. Make sure you INVITE YOURSELF to this event! And INVITE YOUR FRIENDS too!!
  2. Like Urban Love on facebook to become a part of this fun community movement

As Qu says GET SOCIAL, BE PUBLIC and STAY FRESH!!!

Til the next get together

P.S. I must admit some excitement of seeing myself my family and friends pictured on the facebook timeline picture of Urban Love- you have to look closely!

P.P.S Isn't it time you met some motivated interesting people to hang with?

Who is YOUR neighbor? And how can you make life better for them?

Candice Vleugels - Thursday, April 12, 2012

Dog poop in your garden, noisy parties by the teenagers keeping you awake and fears that their tree might fall on your roof... those are the usual interactions we have with our neighbors. Unfortunately most of the time you hear more negative than good things from people when they talk about their neighbors.

Its not the good old days anymore when all the kids on the block used to play together or neighbors would deliver a casserole when you moved in.  At least, I didn't think so, until I moved to our new lovely neighborhood in Seattle.

I am continuously impressed by how welcoming and giving our neighbors are in this hilly corner of the home of American coffee culture.  Here are some examples -

1. Our next door neighbor is a lovely elderly Japanese lady. We help with her garden sometimes and in turn she makes the most AMAZING homemade Japanese style custard cream puffs and leaves a box of them on the doorstep for us to enjoy.

2. One of our neighborhood restaurants, St. Clouds, which is about a 15 minute walk away has the mission to "Build community by bringing people together around food." My sister-in-law and her husband took us to dinner there one night. We spoke with the owner, John, about their monthly community cooking for the homeless project. Once a month anyone from the community is invited to join the owner in a bit of chaotic coop cooking to feed about 200 of Seattle's homeless. St. Clouds provides the protein and the space and the community provides the labor and the rest of the food. I have yet had a chance to join, but it sounds like a fantastic way to meet your neighbors while helping those in need and you might learn a new recipe in the meantime. I've heard it is a lot of fun.

3. One of the mothers in my daughter's coop preschool has decided that she is going to take responsibility for running a group of 30 volunteers to manage a new family homeless shelter for 1 week a quarter at a neighborhood church. Due to tough economic times, the number of families that are homeless has risen and often there is a several week long wait to get a spot in one of the few shelters that allows families. This mother could not even begin to imagine her own children sleeping on the street due to some bad luck, so she has taken it upon herself to lead the way for a group of volunteers. Now she is looking for other mothers to join her in helping to take care of these families by providing them with a warm meal for dinner, playing with the kids, and sleeping at the shelter to provide support.

4. Two houses away, a wife and husband on our street hosted a party to raise money for Care to Help, a small Seattle-based non-profit organization that raises money to provide remote Vietnamese villages with healthy drinking water and additional health and education support. Her friends started the project because they simply felt they had to help after a trip to Vietnam.

5. On Easter Sunday we went to another neighbor's for dinner. They knew that we had just moved from Hong Kong and that most of my daughter's toys were in storage. At the mother's suggestion, the two children ages 4 and 6 went around their home with a big bag picking out toys to give to Zoe. It was an incredibly sweet and unselfish gesture for such little people.

My heart has been warmed at all of the GOOD happening in our neighborhood... all of this is happening within a 1 mile radius!  It is really incredible to be a part of a community where it seems like everyone is thinking about how to make each other feel better and cope better in this hectic world. I do believe this attitude is infectious... the more people reaching out the more people will reach out in turn.  Some people believe that there is a cosmic shift happening in the world right now, where slowly humanity is becoming more connected and more in touch with one another through GOOD. Living here, I totally believe it.

So I ask you, who is your neighbor?  And how can you make life better for them? Please leave thoughts and comments below on how your neighbors are connecting and improving their community. Its nice to spread the LOVE!

With warm neighborly wishes,

Candice
